Carrying the theme, “Ugaliing Magtanim, Sapat na Nutrisyon Aanihin!”, the Local Government Unit of Lamut, along with the different line agencies, and the eighteen (18) BLGUs celebrated the 2018 Nutrition Month last July 31, 2018.  Spearheaded by the Municipal Nutrition Council (MNC), the celebration started with the parade, which was assembled at the Lamut Central School grounds, forward to the National Highway and towards the Lamut Bridge as turning point, and finally to the Municipal Gymnasium, where each delegation was energetically acknowledged and welcomed by Mr. Reynaldo G. Nalliw, and Hon. Everda Desiree D. Dulinayan, the assigned emcees of the program.

The program proper started around 8:40 A.M. PST, part of which was the introduction of Mr. Villafuerte Camat, Jr., owner and manager of a 1.5 hectare farm located at Kinawayanan, Poblacion West, Lamut, Ifugao. The Camat’s Farm is now a duly accredited Learning Site for Organic Agriculture both of the Municipal Local Government of Lamut and Provincial Local Government Unit of Ifugao. Mr. Camat, a certified organic farming practitioner, has received numerous awards from Municipal, Provincial and Regional levels as acknowledgement for his commitment to practice and impart his knowledge about organic farming. As a result of Mr. Camat’s perseverance and his family’s unwavering support to practice organic farming, back in 2017 the farm was accredited as a School for Practical Agriculture (SPA), offering higher level of learning on Organic Agriculture and has recently been awarded accreditation by the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Lagawe, Ifugao, as a Technical Vocational Institution (TVI).  Mr. Camat had the chance to impart benefits of consuming organic food products and discuss some points on Organic Farming.

Following intermission numbers from the MNC Members & LGU Choir and the Poblacion East Development Center was the reading of the criteria for judging the Performing Arts Contest, by the Chairman of the Board of Judges. The participants namely, Lawig NHS-Main, Hapid NHS-Main, Alupapan Integrated School, Hapid NHS-Annex, Mongilit NHS and IPSHS, proudly performed in their bid to gain the judges’ favor over co-competitors, while the audience and supporters applauded and cheered in appreciation of the active participation and great effort exerted by the contestants.

The latter part of the program was dedicated to the awarding of plaques and prizes for the Best Nutrition Program Implementer, with Barangay Poblacion East bagging 1st Place, 2nd Place by Barangay Salamague and Barangay Pugol for the 3rd Place. The performance by Lawig NHS-Main ranked 1st, followed by Hapid NHS-Annex and IPSHS taking the 3rd rank for the Performing Arts Contest, while Poblacion East dominated the Parade Contest boasting off a remarkable 96.5 grade from the Board of Judges, followed by Barangay Panopdopan with 87.5 and 86.25 for Barangay Mabatobato. The MNC also took the chance, which of course, is very timely, to award the plaque of recognition to Ms. Maribel Bu-ucan, Poblacion East Barangay Nutrition Scholar, for being the 1st Placer in the Provincial Search for the Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar.

Though the celebration ended declaring winners over their respective competitors, despite the great motivation and determination to dominate from all the participants, may the spirit of sportsmanship reign and may all of us be guided and inspired to maintain a healthy, and possibly an organic diet and an active lifestyle. Let us also bear in mind that this Nutrition Month’s theme, “Ugaliing Magtanim, Sapat na Nutrisyon aanihin” can only be realized and achieved thru commitment, consistency and perseverance as portrayed by Mr. Villafuerte Camat, Jr. and Ms. Maribel Bu-ucan in their own fields of specialization. Like what these remarkable people portray, may all of us be more aware and cautious of what we and our family members take in as sustenance or practice as routine or habits. May we also become active participants to programs spearheaded by government agencies, geared towards information dissemination concerning the benefits of organic farming and strict implementation of nutrition programs, and consequently the reduction if not eradication of malnourishment, especially, among children or youngsters. May we continue to radiate the notion that “Health is Wealth”, and that to attain health, we need to consume nutritious, as much as possible organic food products, and practice an active and healthy lifestyle. After all, as how Sir Franklin Pierce Adams put it, “Health is the thing that makes you feel that now is the best time of the year”. #KSFLeones
